Towles, Company A, 4th Virginia Cavalry, Confederate Army, kept while a prisoner of the Union Army in Warrenton, Va. and Washington, D.C. Includes a description of ths escape and return to Prince William County, Va. Includes a copy of his furlough, 1863, signed by J.E.B. Stuart. There are also copies of letters, 1864, and articles concerning the death of his brothers, John Vivian Towles, James B. Towles and his own death.

The 4th Virginia Cavalry was organized in September 19, 1861 and reorganized in April, 1862. After the reorganization, the regiment was under the command of Williams Carter Wickham (1820-1888). The regiment, assigned to General Jeb Stuart's, Fitzhugh Lee's, and Wickham's Brigades, participated in every major battle and campaign that involved the Army of Northern Virginia, from the 1st Bull Run to Appomattox Court House. Born September 6, 1843. He enlisted in Co. A, 4th Cavalry. Was detached as a scout for J.E.B. Stuart, May to June 1863. He was captured August 3, 1863, but escaped from Old Capitol Prison.
